MULTI-MILLION-POUND BOOST FOR NORTH EAST MANUFACTURING

A University of Sunderland project which aims to support manufacturers across the North East has secured an extra £6m in funding. The university’s Sustainable Advanced Manufacturing Project (SAM), which was due to end in December 2020, has provided £800,000 in matched-funding - as well as practical and research support to more than 200 SMEs across the region. The programme is now set to continue its work through to 2023 after securing an extra £6m. Professor Jon Timmis, deputy vice-chancellor (Commercial) at the university, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this grant to continue the important work in our support of manufacturing in the North East. "The university is committed to ensuring we support businesses in this sector to innovate and grow. The work in SAM is critically important as we start to plan recovery due to the result of the pandemic." The project was originally part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund– with a £2.6m commitment - and the University of Sunderland and industry, which invested £2.5m. This extension will see the technical research and development team grow. Ken Teears, project manager at SAM, said: "During the last two years, we’ve provided funding and support to scores of businesses and have witnessed first-hand the impact this has had, from safeguarding and creating jobs to transforming entire production lines."Now, more than ever, manufacturers need our support and this funding boost will go a long way to helping many of the region’s SMEs adapt and grow as we look to get through this crisis and keep Britain’s economy moving."

The University of Sunderland student has been training in the martial art for a decade – thanks to dad John. John, who also works at the University, encouraged his son to take up the discipline which he himself had been practising since 1984. Now Cameron, already a member of the University’s Elite Athlete Scheme, has his sights firmly set on the World Championships in Denmark next year after picking up silver in last month’s British National Championships.

CITY'S FIRST FEMALE MP RECOGNISED WITH BLUE PLAQUE

A Blue Heritage plaque, commemorating Sunderland’s first woman MP was unveiled in the city centre. University of Sunderland academic and researcher Dr Sarah Hellawell campaigned to secure the plaque, marking the work of Labour Party politician Marion Phillips who held her seat in the city between 1929 and 1931. Houghton and Sunderland South MP Bridget Phillipson unveiled the plaque during a ceremony at the former Labour Party Committee Rooms in Foyle Street.

ENJOYING ART WITH A COFFEE

Jessica Browne, graduated MA Fine Art from Sunderland University last year, and is now studying for her PhD, also at Sunderland. She says her work – 21 paintings that cover the wall of the new café – was inspired by the natural world, and her native North East.

“I’m a self-employed artist, and loaning some of my work to the University seemed like a great opportunity to get some of my art seen,” says Jessica. “Also, I’d just moved studios and I had way too many paintings, so it was nice to make a bit of space!

“The work is abstract, but inspired by botanical and plants from the region.”

Jessica’s work is making a splash in the region – as well as the work on display in the café, she is also one of a number of artists who have created surfboards for the exhibition, City by the Sea, on display at Sunderland’s Beam, the new development at the city’s former Vaux site.

“I really like the idea of creating work for my home city. I think you can have a sustainable career as an artist if you stay in the North East.”

All 50 of the large trail sculptures were on display. Guest speakers included James Ellam, Chief Executive at St Oswald’s Hospice, Charlie Langhorne, Managing Director at Wild at Art and Tobyn Hughes, Managing Director at Nexus and Paul Black from Anderson press, representing the Elmer Book’s publishers. Elmer artists in attendance included local celebrity, Alfie Joey, Artist and Homeware Gift designer Corrine Lewis Ward from Powder Butterfly and Illustrator Bethan Laker. Durham Cathedral was illuminated for A special service, which was led by the Bishop of Durham, Paul Butler. The Night of the Stars Lumiere event, was projected onto the north transept of the cathedral, featured stars, images from the gospels, and other pictures illustrating the Christmas story. It was the first time the Church of England had used the technology as part of a service of worship and the event was live streamed to a worldwide audience on Facebook. The crowd gathered outside the cathedral to watch the illuminations, listen to readings and sing carols.

On November 11, 2018, Remembrance Sunday, the public were invited by award winning film director Danny Boyle and the NOW14-18 World War 1 Centenary Art Commissons to gather on beaches across the UK for an informal, nationwide gesture of remembrance for the men and women who left their home shores during the First World War. With Roker Beach in Sunderland chosen as one of a handful of beaches across the country.

Each project centred on a drawing of a large-scale portrait of a casualty from the First World War, designed by sand artists Sand In Your Eye, which would be washed away as the tide came in. In addition, members of the public were asked to join in by creating silhouettes of people in the sand, remembering the millions of lives lost or changed forever by the conflict.

The people of Sunderland came together to remember and to honour 2nd Lt Hugh Carr who was born in Houghton in 1891 and died in the Ypres salient on January 1916 when a German shell landed near his trench. He’d transferred from the Household Cavalry to a Royal Engineers tunnelling company where he was using his experience as a miner. Hugh was seriously wounded when a German shell exploded in a trench positioned in the small French village of St Eloi, 5km south of Ypres, on January 21, 1916. He was transferred by train to a field hospital in Remy Siding, Poperinge, with leg, head and arm injuries. He died of his wounds two days later, aged 25. He was buried in a cemetery next to the hospital. His parents were informed by telegram.

Danny Boyle said: “Beaches are truly public spaces, where nobody rules other than the tide. They seem the perfect place to gather and say a final goodbye and thank you to those whose lives were taken or forever changed by the First World War. I’m inviting people to watch as the faces of the fallen are etched in the sand, and for communities to come together to remember the sacrifices that were made.”

Internationally-renowned photographer, photo-journalist, activist and visiting photography professor, Shahidul Alam, was arrested following an interview with Al Jazeera when he spoke about the Government and issues relating to the then active student protests in Dhaka.

A lot of commissions require you to work within very short timeframes, as availability and time can be limited. They required new set of profile images of their new Vice Chancellor along with a small selection of more formal images of him in his Chancellor Regalia for in house material. I had less than 10 minutes to catch him on a landing outside one meeting, usher him into a small office to capture some images of him in his regalia allowing him enough time to walk across campus to his next meeting, with all the selected images processed and sent within the hour.

Thousands of students from Sunderland College helped give the city centre a facelift, after taking part in a three-day clean-up initiative. An estimated 3000 young people rolled up their sleeves as part of Project 100, devised by Sunderland’s Business Improvement District and backed by Sunderland City Council. The scheme involved student volunteers who took part in one of 100 different jobs to improve different areas of the city centre, with the main focus of the project in and around Park Lane Market, Stockton Road, High Street West and Sunniside areas. Around four tonnes of rubbish was collected from the market, as the students cleared out more than 30 units to get the space ready for the Christmas market.
